Zumba Classes at IM Gallery

What is Zumba?  Zumba is a total body toning aerobic workout that combines Latin dance steps with fitness moves.  The moves are borrowed from contemporary Caribbean and South American dances and exaggerated to raise the heart rate and tone all the major muscle groups.  The music is motivating and lively, and is the same calorie-torching workout that is helping people all over the world lose weight and get fit.  Zumba was created by a Colombian fitness instructor named Alberto “Beto” Perez.

Text Box: Getting Fit With Zumba
My introduction to Zumba was when Andrea Orlando gave a demonstration at my job in December. After the hour long class, I had lots of fun, learned dance moves and felt like I really workout without it being an awful chore. I decided to join her class once a week and after a month I lost 6 lbs.

What’s most amazing is I lost weight during the holidays because every year for as long as I can remember I’ve gained about 10 lbs from Thanksgiving to the New Year so those 6 lbs felt more like losing 20 lbs. Les Brown says ”Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” Andrea is an amazing teacher whose choice of music; complete body workout keeps you moving which guarantees that you’ll see results if you try to do the step or keep moving when you don’t know them.

The benefits of Zumba to me are life changing because I’ve lost weight and it relaxes me to the point that on the nights that I take class I’m assured of a good night’s sleep. Zumba is my new stress reliever and I want to say an extra special thanks to Andrea and all that it takes for her being the best Zumba instructor and creating a memorable experience with every class. With my decision to take Zumba three (3) times a week, drink more water and eat better to achieve my goal to better health in 2010.

What To Wear for Zumba Classes

Footwear for Zumba: Please wear a sneaker designed for aerobic dance or hip hop. Aerobic dance sneakers are sold at athletic shoe stores, such as Foot Locker.  Hip hop shoes are sold at dance shoe stores or can be ordered through catalogues.  Andrea wears Klassik hip-hop sneakers by the manufacturer Bloch.  Order 1/2 size to 1 size larger than your street shoe, as the Klassik runs small.  Expect to pay between $50 and $60 for the Klassik.  Capezio hip-hop sneakers run between $40 and $60.  Dancin’ On The Moon in East Brunswick offers a 10% discount for people who attend events at IM Gallery.  Just say “Marc from Highland Park Dance sent me.”

Clothing:  Wear comfortable, light clothing that allows you freedom of movement.  A good rule of thumb is to aim to feel chilly before you start moving.  Once you warm up you'll feel comfortable and have more energy for the rest of the class.
